Joe’s Pizza NYC: NYC’s Most Iconic Slice Shop Since 1975

When people think of a quintessential New York City street slice, they are thinking of Joe’s Pizza. For over half a century, this no-frills pizzeria has served as the gold standard for the iconic New York slice: thin, crispy, beautifully charred, and perfectly foldable without spilling excess oil. From Hollywood blockbusters to midnight cravings, Joe’s Pizza is more than just a restaurant — it is an enduring NYC landmark and a cultural institution, and its reputation has spread from a single Greenwich Village counter to street corners across Manhattan and Brooklyn.

A Slice of NYC History

Joe’s Pizza was founded in 1975 by Pino “Joe” Pozzuoli, an Italian immigrant who journeyed from Naples — the historical birthplace of Neapolitan pizza — to Manhattan. Seeking to offer authentic, straightforward street food to the bustling crowds of Lower Manhattan, Joe opened his tiny counter-serve storefront in Greenwich Village, betting that a simple, well-made slice would outlast any trend.

Originally operating from a small corner spot at Bleecker and Carmine Street, the original location moved just three doors down to 7 Carmine Street in 2005 — close enough that longtime regulars barely noticed the change. Today, the business remains proudly family-owned and operated, with Joe and his family ensuring that the Naples-origin recipe and high-quality standards remain completely unchanged, even as the shop has grown into a small citywide group with a Times Square outpost that is now just as recognizable as the original.

Why Joe’s Pizza Matters to NYC Culture

Joe’s Pizza does not rely on fancy crusts, gourmet toppings, or pretentious presentation. Its importance to New York City boils down to three distinct cultural pillars.

Pop Culture and Hollywood: Joe’s Pizza is globally famous as the fictional workplace of Peter Parker in the cinematic classic Spider-Man 2, and the shop leans into it — a plaque near the register calls out the Spider-Man connection right alongside a New York Magazine “Best of New York” honor. Fans still visit every day just to stand where a piece of Marvel movie history was made.

The Celebrity Wall of Fame: Step inside any Joe’s location and you are greeted by walls covered in photos of famous faces — actors, athletes, and musicians — all enjoying the same cheap, humble slice on a paper plate as everyone else in line. A framed clipping on the wall even quotes New York Magazine calling it the definitive New York slice, a small reminder that Joe’s has never treated fame as a reason to change the menu or the price.

The Benchmark Foldable Slice: Food critics and locals consider Joe’s the literal baseline for NYC pizza. It perfected the science of “tip integrity” — a design standard ensuring the slice remains crisp and does not droop or drip grease when folded in half, the test every other NYC slice is quietly measured against.

What’s on the Menu at Joe’s Pizza

The menu board hasn’t changed its spirit since 1975, even if the prices have. A classic cheese pie runs $29 (or $33 with one topping), and the specialty pies — Fresh Mozz, White, Caprese, Meat Lovers, Supreme, and Veggie — sit in the $33–$37 range. There’s a 12-inch gluten-free pie for $26, salads from $13, and toppings like pepperoni, sausage, meatball, and fresh chopped garlic run $4 for the first and $2 for each additional one.

Behind the Counter at Joe’s Pizza

Behind the front counter, the operation runs like clockwork: dough gets stretched and topped in one motion, pies slide in and out of the oven in a steady rhythm, and stacks of takeout boxes climb toward the ceiling to keep up with the line out front. It’s a small, unglamorous kitchen doing the same job, the same way, night after night — which is exactly the point.

The Famous Locations

While the original West Village hub continues to dominate culinary bucket lists, the family has carefully expanded into a handful of bustling neighborhoods. The Midtown location, tucked under scaffolding at Broadway and West 41st Street just off Times Square, draws a line that spills onto the sidewalk most nights of the week. Here are the primary locations across the city:

  • Greenwich Village (The Original): 7 Carmine St, New York, NY 10014
  • Midtown / Times Square: 1435 Broadway, New York, NY 10018
  • East Village: 150 E 14th St, New York, NY 10003
  • Financial District: 124 Fulton St, New York, NY 10038
  • Williamsburg (Brooklyn): 216 Bedford Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11249

How to Get to Joe’s Pizza’s Original Location

By Subway: Take the A, C, E, B, D, F, or M trains directly to the West 4th St–Washington Sq Station. From the station exit, it is a short, scenic 5-minute walk southwest toward Carmine Street.

Alternative Subway Route: You can also take the 1 train to the Christopher St–Sheridan Sq Station and walk a few blocks southeast.

What to Know Before You Go: The original Carmine Street shop is famously cash-only, though an ATM is available inside. Be prepared to stand in a line that stretches down the block — but don’t worry, the staff operates like a finely-tuned machine and the queue moves exceptionally fast. The Midtown location tends to be just as busy in the evenings, so if you’re headed there instead, expect a similar wait.

For more Midtown food spots, EnFlive has also covered Tallow Steakhouse and Brasserie Cognac Américain, both an easy walk from Joe’s. For more authentic New York City food guides and travel itineraries, keep exploring EnFlive.com.
