Brasserie Cognac Américain had been on my radar for weeks before I finally went to see it myself. The room opens up into nearly 12,000 square feet, but it never feels cavernous — deep red leather booths line the walls, the floor is a striking black-and-white checkerboard pattern, and the lighting has this warm, golden quality that made me want to slow down the moment I sat.

What actually stopped me mid-step was a wall near the seating area lined floor-to-ceiling with a colorful, almost collector’s-shelf display — rows of small jars and bottles catching the light. I found myself staring at it longer than I probably should have before I even sat down.

If I went back, I’d order the Lobster Américaine again without hesitation, along with the Tagliatelle aux Truffes, the slow-braised Beef Bourguignon, and — if there’s room left — the Cheese Soufflé, which several tables around me were also ordering.

7. A Room Built for Lingering — Near a Great Neighborhood
Between the booth seating, the lighting, and the sheer size of the space, it never felt rushed. I stayed far longer than I’d planned to. And since it sits right by Bryant Park, it makes an easy stop before or after exploring more of Midtown — if you have extra time afterward, it pairs nicely with a visit to Radio City Music Hall, which isn’t far north.
How to Get There Yourself
Address: 461 5th Ave, New York, NY 10017 — right at the corner of 5th Avenue and East 40th Street, directly across from the New York Public Library.
By Subway: Take the 7, B, D, F, or M trains to 42 St–Bryant Park, which is about a 2-minute walk from the door. It’s also an easy walk from Grand Central–42 St via the 4, 5, 6, or S lines — that’s the route I took.
Reservations: I’d recommend booking ahead through Resy or OpenTable, especially if you’re going around typical lunch or dinner hours — the room was filling up fast while I was there.
