The Roosevelt Island Tramway is one of New York City’s most unique, historic, and budget-friendly attractions, and after riding it myself more times than I can count, it’s still the view I recommend first to anyone visiting Manhattan. Suspended 250 feet above the East River, this striking red aerial gondola glides passengers across a panoramic, bird’s-eye view of the skyline for the cost of a standard subway fare. Whether you’re a history buff, a film fan, or just looking for the best view-to-dollar ratio in the city, the tram earns its spot on any NYC itinerary.

Why the Roosevelt Island Tramway Is a Perfect Tourist Location

  • Million-Dollar Views on a Budget: Skip the expensive observation decks. For less than $3.00, you glide directly past midtown skyscrapers, with unbeatable views of the Chrysler Building, One Vanderbilt, and the Empire State Building.
  • A Quick, Scenic Thrill: The ride takes roughly 4 minutes from end to end, making it an efficient injection of adventure into a busy sightseeing day.
  • Gateway to an Island Oasis: The tram carries you away from Manhattan’s frantic energy to Roosevelt Island, where you can stroll waterfront paths, visit the historic Smallpox Memorial Hospital ruins, or take in the skyline from the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms State Park.
  • Pop Culture Royalty: The tram is instantly recognizable worldwide, having been featured in major films like Spider-Man (2002) and King Kong, along with numerous television shows.

What sold me on the tram the first time wasn’t just the price — it was watching the whole cabin lift off the ground and realizing the East River was suddenly right underneath me. It’s the kind of moment that photographs never quite capture, which is exactly why it’s worth doing in person.

Historical Importance to NYC

The Roosevelt Island Tramway holds a storied place in North American transit history.

  • A Continental First: When it opened on May 17, 1976, it was the first commuter aerial tramway in North America.
  • The Temporary Fix That Stayed: Originally built as a temporary solution to shuttle new residents to Manhattan while the island’s subway station faced massive construction delays, it grew so beloved by locals that the city kept it running even after the F train subway line finally arrived in 1989.
  • A Local Landmark: Having celebrated its landmark 50th anniversary, the modern, quiet red cabins now stand alongside yellow cabs and subway cars as an official mascot and symbol of New York infrastructure.

Riding the Roosevelt Island Tramway: How to Get There

Where to Board:

  • Manhattan Terminal: Located at Tramway Plaza (East 60th Street and Second Avenue).
  • Roosevelt Island Terminal: Located at Tramway Plaza on the island’s west side.

Getting to the Manhattan Station by Subway: Take the 4, 5, 6, N, R, or W trains to the Lexington Ave/59th St station, then walk just one to two blocks east toward 2nd Avenue.

The Roosevelt Island Tramway ride costs $2.90 each way, matching the standard MTA subway fare: The ride costs $2.90 each way, matching the standard MTA subway fare. You can tap your phone or a contactless bank card on the OMNY readers, or swipe a standard MetroCard. Trams depart every 7 to 15 minutes, running year-round from 6:00 AM to 2:00 AM Sunday through Thursday, and until 3:30 AM on Fridays and Saturdays.

If aerial views over the water are your thing, another ride worth adding to your list is Circle Line Pier 83, which takes you all the way around Manhattan by boat instead of by cable.

And once you’re across, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms State Park at the island’s southern tip is worth the extra walk — it’s one of the quietest, most dramatic skyline views in the entire city.

Insider Tip

Board during the late afternoon. This gives you time to explore the island, catch a stunning sunset over the skyline, and enjoy a glowing night ride back into Manhattan on the Roosevelt Island Tramway — hands down the best version of this trip.
