Tallow Steakhouse has officially opened its doors in Midtown Manhattan, marking a major milestone as Texas-based hospitality group FB Society’s first-ever restaurant footprint in New York City. Nestled at 436 Fifth Avenue on the ground floor of the historic Lord & Taylor building, this highly anticipated debut brings a streamlined, ultra-focused approach to a city famous for its legendary steak institutions.

By eliminating the rigid and overly expensive corporate dining tropes of the past, Tallow delivers a hyper-curated, high-quality, and completely unpretentious steak frites experience engineered for how modern New Yorkers actually want to dine.

Tallow Steakhouse’s One Menu, Done Right: The $49 Prix-Fixe Concept

Rather than overwhelming guests with multi-page menus and massive a la carte pricing, Tallow leans into minimalist luxury with a $49 three-course prix-fixe menu:

First Course: The meal kicks off with warm, house-made sourdough focaccia paired with a bright, citrusy Italian salad featuring a creamy homemade dressing.

The Butcher’s Cut: Diners select their preferred USDA Prime cut sourced directly from the legendary master butchers at Pat LaFrieda. Options include perfectly tender filet mignon, rich hanger steak, or flavorful picanha.

The Signature Sides: Every steak arrives alongside crisp, gold-standard, hand-cut French fries fried entirely in rich beef tallow, seasoned with rosemary sage salt, and complemented by artisanal house sauces like a creamy, cracked au poivre.

For guests looking to indulge further, the streamlined menu allows for effortless add-ons, including roasted bone marrow and fresh burrata. The beverage program keeps pace with the culinary simplicity, focusing on a curated list of clean wines and expertly mixed dirty martinis.

Transforming a Fifth Avenue Historic Landmark

The physical location of Tallow Steakhouse beautifully bridges Gilded Age craftsmanship with contemporary New York style. The space sits directly integrated into Shaver Hall, the massive, vibrant new food hall revitalizing the former Lord & Taylor flagship building.

The specific corner occupied by the steakhouse originally housed some of Fifth Avenue’s most dazzling, high-end jewelry showcases at the turn of the 20th century. Today, the venue pays homage to that history of precise craftsmanship, swapping out diamond displays for masterfully cut butcher blocks and a dedicated private dining room.

A Dedicated ‘No-Rush’ Dining Philosophy at Tallow Steakhouse

What truly sets Tallow apart from Midtown’s fast-paced dining scene is its strict “no-rush” hospitality policy. While the service itself is exceptionally fast and disciplined, the restaurant explicitly encourages guests to linger over their drinks and conversation for as long as they want.

Plan Your Visit

Tallow Steakhouse is open daily for dinner from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM, with weekday lunch served between 11:30 AM and 2:00 PM. Due to the high volume of foot traffic in Shaver Hall, booking in advance through Resy or OpenTable is strongly recommended.

Insider Tip: If you’re exploring more of Midtown’s dining scene, our review of Brasserie Cognac Américain near Bryant Park is another excellent stop for European-inspired fine dining. And if it’s smoky, low-and-slow meat you’re after, our deep dive on Dinosaur Bar-B-Que Harlem covers 40 years of legendary BBQ uptown.

To reach Tallow Steakhouse, head to 436 Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, situated right at the corner of 5th Avenue and West 39th Street. It is directly inside Shaver Hall on the ground level.
