The Statue of Liberty stands 305 feet tall on Liberty Island in the Upper New York Bay, and after more than a century she remains the most recognizable symbol of freedom and immigration in the world. Whether you are a lifelong New Yorker who has never made the trip out to the island or a first-time visitor trying to navigate the ferry system, this guide covers everything — the official ferry, the best free views, the smartest subway routes, and the local secrets that most tourists never discover.

How to Get to Liberty Island: The Only Authorized Ferry

To actually set foot on Liberty Island, there is only one option: Statue City Cruises, the sole authorized ferry service permitted to dock on both Liberty Island and Ellis Island. The experience is well worth planning ahead for.

Departure Points:

  • The Battery (Battery Park), Lower Manhattan — the primary departure point
  • Liberty State Park, Jersey City, NJ — often less crowded and with easier parking

Cost: General Admission starts at $26.00 for adults and includes round-trip ferry transportation plus access to both Liberty Island and the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration. Access to the Pedestal and Crown requires a separate, higher-tier ticket and sells out months in advance — book those online as early as possible.

Pro-Tip: Arrive at the terminal at least 30 minutes before your timed departure to clear airport-style security screening.

The Local’s Secret: Best Free Views of the Statue of Liberty

New Yorkers know that you do not need to spend $26 for a great view of Lady Liberty. Several free and low-cost alternatives give you stunning sightlines without the security lines or timed tickets.

Staten Island Ferry

The best free view in New York City. This commuter ferry runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and it passes directly in front of the Statue of Liberty during its 25-minute crossing between Whitehall Terminal in Lower Manhattan and St. George Terminal in Staten Island. There is no ticket required — it is a completely free public service.

Strategic Seating Tip: Stand on the right side of the boat when leaving Manhattan for the closest views. On the return trip, move to the left side.

Governors Island

Accessible by a short ferry ride from Lower Manhattan or Brooklyn (free on weekend mornings before 11 AM), Governors Island offers some of the most dramatic and uncrowded views of the statue from its western waterfront. The angle from Governors Island gives you the statue against the open bay — a perspective that professional photographers love.

Subway & Train Directions to the Ferry Terminals

Getting to the ferry without a car is straightforward from most of Manhattan and the outer boroughs.

To The Battery (Manhattan Terminal)

  • 1 Train → South Ferry station (last stop) — the terminal exit is directly next to the park
  • 4 or 5 Train → Bowling Green station — exit and walk south through Battery Park for about 3 minutes
  • R or W Train → Whitehall Street-South Ferry station

To Liberty State Park (New Jersey Terminal)

  • PATH Train from World Trade Center (Manhattan) → Exchange Place station (Jersey City)
  • At Exchange Place → transfer to Hudson-Bergen Light Rail (HBLR) southbound → Liberty State Park station

From the Light Rail station, the historic terminal and ferry ticket booth are about a 1-mile walk east through the park

Avoiding the Crowds: Timing Your Visit Like a Local

  • Go Early: Catch the first ferry of the day (usually around 8:30 AM or 9:00 AM) to beat the heavy midday tourist rush
  • Depart from New Jersey: The Liberty State Park terminal consistently has shorter security lines and easier parking ($8–$20) compared to the Manhattan terminal
  • Visit Weekdays: Weekends and major American holidays see the heaviest crowds at both the security checkpoints and the docks
  • Book Crown Access Early: Pedestal and Crown tickets sell out months in advance — if this is your priority, check the Statue City Cruises website the moment dates become available
